Volunteer

Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA) welcomes a diverse range of volunteers.

“We educated, privileged lawyers have a professional and moral duty to represent the underrepresented in our society, to ensure that justice exists for all, both legal and economic justice.”

-Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayer

We invite private attorneys and attorneys and paralegals from firms and in-house legal departments to take full-scope cases or to volunteer in our immigration, housing and reentry clinics.  All of our pro bono volunteers receive training and mentoring throughout a case and our clinics are supervised by expert attorneys.  We are a certified MCLE provider and also provide malpractice insurance for our pro bono volunteers. Check out our Pro Bono Year in Review for more background on how you can make a difference!

To receive regular emails about available cases, or for more information, please feel free to email our Pro Bono Coordinator, Aileen Connolly, at aconnolly@clsepa.org

If you are bilingual in English and another language, please sign up for our Volunteer Interpreter Panel!  We are particularly in need of Spanish speakers but welcome all bilingual volunteers who can be called upon to interpret at hearings or interviews during the week.  If you have a little less flexibility during the day, you can also volunteer to interpret documents for our clients remotely.

For more information, email our Pro Bono Coordinator, Aileen Connolly, at aconnolly@clsepa.org

Administrative support is critical to making our organization work successfully for our clients.  If you are detail oriented, passionate about social justice and think you can commit to volunteering regularly for us, we’d love to hear from you! If you are bilingual in English and Spanish, even better.  Our administrative volunteers work in our offices, supporting our staff with a variety of administrative tasks.

Internships and Fellowships

We welcome undergraduates throughout the year to work in our offices for academic credit.  Ideal candidates speak Spanish, are passionate about social justice, interested in non-profit work, detail-oriented, and prepared to work on a variety of tasks.  We provide supervision and mentorship but unfortunately, cannot provide financial support.

If you are interested, please send a CV describing why you want to intern with us and with which program, a list of 3 references, and a short (3-5 page) writing sample to aconnolly@clsepa.org.  Make sure to let us know if you speak Spanish!  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

We work with social justice minded law students throughout the academic year and summers who are interested in learning how to serve disadvantaged communities outside of the classroom.   If you are accepted, you will work directly with one of our staff attorneys and get hands-on experience in a dynamic non-profit.  Law students are expected to source funding through their schools as we cannot provide financial support.

If you are interested, please send a CV describing why you want to intern with us and with which program, a list of 3 references, and a short (3-5) page writing sample to aconnolly@clsepa.org.  Make sure to let us know if you speak Spanish!  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

If you are about to graduate, please take a look at our Opportunities page for information on fellowships as well Skadden and Equal Justice Works sponsorships.
